Introduction
Papakura Marae Te Kaupapa is here to provide a sense of belonging and connection through a Te Ao Māori lens. We navigate whānau through their own experiences and learning, aiming for success and empowering them to begin changing the narrative of their stories. Papakura Marae is a Mātaawaka Marae within the Rohe of Waikato Tainui in South Auckland.

Te Kaupapa is grounded in Mātauranga Māori, and our Rōpū guides whānau to reconnect with ancestral tools and knowledge to navigate distress within the Hinengaro and Wairua. Our focus is to equip whānau with tailored support and resources to strengthen their journey from Te Pō [the darkness] to Te Ao Mārama [the light].
The Program Includes:
- Whakawhānaungatanga – Building connections between the whānau, the team, and Te Ngira (Whare Tūpuna).
- Taonga Pūoro – Taonga Puoro: With traditional instruments including ukutangi, porotiti and koauau; whanau will develop emotional self-regulation and increased mindfulness.
- Rongoā – Plant medicine knowledge and identification.
- Maramataka – Enhancing our observation of Te Taiao (the natural world) and tuning into how we are feeling. This includes journaling observations and reflecting on each session to express feelings through writing.
- Utilising Te Taiao – Connecting with the elements of he wai (water), he hau (air), he papatūānuku (earth), and Ranginui (sky) in the creation of Taonga Pūoro (Māori instruments).
- Goal Setting – Using art therapy (the wellness circle and Tree of Life) as a method for setting and achieving personal goals.
- Sharing of Pūrākau – Throughout the program, we share pūrākau (stories) related to the activities we are participating in. This is a powerful way to preserve and share traditions, values, and histories. Engaging with pūrākau provides learning outcomes that focus on both personal development and deepening one’s understanding of their culture.
“Be brave, as change requires courage. Be imaginative, because change only comes with imagination.”
